Review of Honest Company Diaper Subscription - All the Pros and Cons Explained
Iβve been a mama for almost 4 years now and weβve been using the Honest Diaper Subscription Service through the birth of two babies. At this point I feel confident in giving a thorough and informative review for anyone considering signing up.
My daughter is now 3.5 years old and my son just turned one year old. With Scout we began using Honest Diapers just a few months after she was born all the way until potty training with pull-ups. Iβm grateful to say that she is now fully potty trained and has graduated to big girl underwear, so now we only use the Honest Diaper service for my son Beau.
In this blog post I will break-down all the pros and cons of the Honest Diaper subscription service. This is not a sponsored post and Iβm more than willing to share the positives along with the pain points of this service.
What is the Honest Diaper Subscription?
The Honest Diaper Subscription is a large box of diapers and baby wipes that get delivered to your house monthly. You pay a flat rate of $82.99 for 7 packs of diapers and 4 packs of wipes. Shipping is always free. The amount of diapers in each pack varies by the size, the smaller the size the more diapers in the pack. This bundle price is a 20% discount than if you bought each of these items individually.
You have a portal where you login and can make selections and adjustments to your bundle. You can select the prints you like, change the shipping dates and swap out items in your bundle. For example you can swap out two wipe packs for a diaper rash cream.
In the portal you can conveniently add on things to your package such as diaper rash cream, extra wipes, skincare, makeup, home cleaning products and bath products. When you add them to your subscription box you save 15% off those items, but they do come at an extra charge and are not included in the $83 bundle price.
Jessica Alba Founded The Honest Company
Actress and mother to 3 Jessica Alba founded The Honest Company in 2011 with the goal of creating much needed non-toxic motherhood and home products for health and eco-conscious parents. Iβve seen several interviews of Alba over the years and she talks about how so many big brands donβt have transparency about all the hidden toxic ingredients inside family and baby care products. She set out to build an empire built with premium and natural products and ten years later The Honest Company has over 100 products.
Honest Diaper Subscription Pros and Highlights
The Cute and Colorful Prints
By far the best part of the Honest Diapers is the fun and whimsical prints. Most diaper companies have very basic and not terribly attractive designs. Honest Diapers have all kinds of modern aesthetic designs to pick from, plus they have limited edition prints for holidays and seasons. Changing diapers is already a drag so having cute diapers makes the process a little fun for the adults.
When your baby gets older and into the toddler years, sometimes they get fussy about diaper changes and wearing pull-ups. My daughter went through a phase where she would throw a tantrum when we needed to change her diaper. Having fun prints that she could pick out herself really helped to ease the process.
One thing to note, the cutest prints and limited edition prints do sell out quickly sometimes. Be sure to check your emails for when the new styles launch and become available to add to your bundle.
Honestβs Clean Conscious Diapers
Not only are Honest diapers super cute but theyβre also better for baby and the environment. Many diaper companies have hidden chemicals and additives in their products which are not ideal for skin to skin contact with babies. The Honest Diapers are one of the cleanest on the market with chlorine-free absorbency layers, plant-based materials, latex free, fragrance-free and no parabens.
Myself and my kids have very sensitive skin which reacts and gets inflamed with contact to fragrances, chemicals and artificial materials. These premium diapers help with avoiding rashes and irritations.
And finally, the Honest Diapers are a much more eco-friendly option with less trees used to create them. Plus they harvest wood from sustainably managed pine and spruce trees in Scandinavia. Disposable diapers wreak havoc on our environment and fill up our landfills. For parents looking to minimize their carbon footprint, Honest Diapers is a great option.
Honest Diapers Are High Quality
The quality of the Honest Diapers is up there with the best of them. They fit very well, they stay on and Iβve never had a problem with leaking. I saw an old review saying that these diapers have a tendency to leak. I have not found this to be the case. They even make heavy overnight diapers which are meant to avoid leaking overnight.
Honest Diaper features include a wetness indicator line, enhanced blowout protection and advanced absorption to keep baby dry. These are your best defenses to the dreaded poop blowouts and leaking wetness. Even with the best diapers on the market, youβll still have the occasional potty accident. This just comes with the territory of parenthood.
Sizes Are Always Available with Honest Diaper Subscription
At my local drug stores the shelves can often be pretty lean in the baby aisle and diaper sizes are sometimes limited. When youβre ordering from the Honest subscription, you can feel confident that theyβll have your diaper size in-stock. Iβve never had any issues with a size being sold out.
Honest Diapers range from newborn to 5T which ranges between 5 pounds to 38 pounds. They have regular diapers, heavy overnight diapers and training pants for toddlers. As your child grows youβll have plenty of diaper options available.
Do Honest Company Diapers Run Small?
Yes, I would say that they do run a bit on the smaller side. My son is currently 12 months old and wearing the Honest Diaper size 4. He is a bigger baby so take that into consideration. For your first order I would go just a tad bigger to make sure you donβt end up with diapers that are too small.
Home Delivery & Adjusting the Delivery Schedule
The Honest Diaper subscription delivers a big box monthly to your house. The pro part of this is obviously the convenience of not having to make a trip into a store.
On the website portal you can adjust your delivery schedule based on when you need the diapers and wipes. You can push the delivery forward to a sooner date or push it out further if you donβt need the bundle right away. You are only charged when the box actually ships. You can also skip a month if needed.
For those with specific delivery schedule needs, you can set your bundle to get delivered every 2 weeks, 3 weeks, 4 weeks, 5 weeks, 6 weeks, 8 weeks or 12 weeks. So technically you could only get a box delivered once every 3 months if you wanted to.
Full-Sized Bonus Items & Discounts
One pleasant surprise I received after 3 months of deliveries is a free full-sized bonus item that you get to add to your box. In the portal you can pick from all kinds of categories including adult skincare, baby skincare, makeup and home cleaning items. Keep an eye out for an email notification letting you know that itβs time to select your free bonus item. This happens every 3rd box you get delivered.
I also mentioned above that you get 15% off any items you add to your bundle. If you regularly use Honest products for your beauty and skincare routine, this could save you some significant money over time. One Honest product I use religiously is the Organic All-Purpose Balm. Every night I apply this balm to my lip area to keep my eczema from flaring up.
Honest Diaper Subscription Cons and Areas That Need Improvements
The Honest Diaper Bundle Doesnβt Have Enough Wipes
My biggest disappointment with the Honest Diapers subscription service is the fact that they donβt provide enough wipes in the set bundle price. I use the baby wipes for both my kidsβ toilet needs and also to clean up after feeding. The bundle box comes with 4 packs of wipes which just doesnβt cover our needs for two kids in a month. You can opt to add more wipes to the bundle at an extra cost.
What I usually end up doing is buying a big pack of WaterWipes from Amazon to cover us for the month. They makes very high quality wipes as well.
Honest Diaper Subscription is Expensive
If your main goal is to budget and save money on diapers, this is not the plan for you. Breaking down the cost per diaper of Honest diapers, theyβre definitely not one of the cheaper ones available on the market. Although you do technically save with the subscription service, youβre still paying a premium for diapers.
If you break down the cost of Honest Diapers per diaper, youβre looking at paying around 60 cents a diaper. The lower budget brands such Huggies and Luvs are 15 cents or less. These may seem like small numbers, but when youβre going through several diapers a day they add up quickly.
Issues with FedEx Shipping
Honest Diaper subscription service uses FedEx to ship out their bundle boxes. Weβve had a few times where the box was super delayed and we had to make emergency runs to the store to buy diapers and wipes. We even had a box that got delivered way beyond the expected date while we were on vacation and we had to ask a neighbor come get the box off our doorstep for us.
I realize that these types of shipping issues are beyond the control of Honest Company, but I do feel like itβs helpful to know when making your decision to subscribe.
I would also check to make sure FedEx delivers to your address. I know that FedEx wonβt deliver to some places and PO Boxes.
In Conclusion: Is the Honest Diaper Subscription Service Really Worth the Cost?
The answer to this question really depends on your personal views on diapers. If youβre only looking to cut the cost then this is probably not for you. The Honest Company products are tailored for conscious consumers who will pay a premium price for eco-friendly and non-toxic products.
For myself, it puts my mind at ease knowing Iβm giving my babies the best possible option for their bodies. Whenever weβre traveling and I have to purchase cheap diapers at the local stores, I always think about all the chemicals theyβre being exposed to. I realize itβs not the end of the world, but I do miss my Honest Diapers when I donβt have them.
Honest Diapers are also guilt-free when it comes to being a steward of the environment and selecting the best disposable diapers for our planet. The Honest Company has done their due diligence to make the most eco-conscious diapers available to parents.
Where Can You Buy Honest Diapers?
In the past you used to be able to buy limited prints of the Honest Diapers in drug stores like CVS and Walgreens but I havenβt seen them in those stores for a while. Lately theyβve been more exclusive on where they sell Honest products, but you can always find them at Target and of course on the Honest website.
I suggest you buy a single pack of Honest Diapers to test out before you commit to the subscription service. See if you fall in love with them and judge for yourself if they live up to all the hype!
