Top 30 San Diego Instagrammable Places

The Carlsbad Flower Fields

Probably the single most Insta-famous spot in the San Diego area are the Carlsbad Flower Fields. And I will admit that the flower fields are truly stunning - both in person and in photos. The ranch is open between the months of March - May in Carlsbad which is a 40 minute drive north from San Diego along the coast.

Balboa Park

Balboa Park is the crown jewel of San Diego with 1,200 sprawling acres. This lush green oasis is centrally located inside urban San Diego’s city limits and is comprised of gardens, walking paths, wide open spaces, the Spreckels Organ outdoor amphitheater, museums, cultural centers and more.

Old Cactus Garden in Balboa Park

While there are many gardens and areas to explore in Balboa Park, one of the best kept secrets is the Old Cactus Garden. The enormous cactus plants date back to 1935 and there’s so many great photo spots. Scroll to the bottom of this blog post to see our photos taken at the Old Cactus Garden. This garden is hidden away and you won’t find it unless you type in the address 2150 Pan American Road West, San Diego.

Potato Chip Rock

After a rigorous hike up the Mount Woodson Trail you'll find some rewarding panoramic landscape views... and an odd rock formation known as "Potato Chip Rock." This famous rock literally looks like an enormous potato chip and it provides fun opportunities for photos. You can sit at the very edge and there's an optical illusion that appears you are precariously dangling above a canyon, but in reality it's pretty safe.

Old Town San Diego

Old Town is a historical park preserved to show what life was like in the early stages of the colonization of California. Old Town is a great place to enjoy some leisurely shopping and dinning in an old-time period setting. While the buildings have been restored to their original styles from the 1700’s, Old Town has an eclectic mix of old world with touches of contemporary style.

La Jolla

La Jolla is a coastal San Diego city that boasts some of the best real estate in Southern California. It’s a very expensive area to live but it’s free to visit the beaches and stroll around the neighborhood blocks. There are waterfront areas of La Jolla where the water is bright turquoise blue which is rare for California coats.

Instagrammers love the following spots in La Jolla:

  • Roy McMakin's Favorite Color Mural

  • Scripps Pier

Coronado Hotel & Beach

The Coronado Hotel is a historical landmark on the island of Coronado. It’s a very large property with a beautiful and well-maintained beach with crystal white sand. While it seems like it would be a private beach reserved only for guests, it’s actually open for the public to enjoy. There’s a beach-side bar where you can order drinks and you may even be able to rent cabanas.

At the very beginning of Point Loma you’ll also find the Liberty Station shopping and dining area. This trendy area has gourmet food, coffee shops, boutiques and Liberty Public Market. You'll find a lot of Spanish Colonial Revival buildings adjacent to grass fields, bike paths and parks.

Sunset Cliffs

Also located in Point Loma is the Sunset Cliffs neighborhood. The area got its namesake because of the dramatic rock cliffs found in Sunset Cliffs Natural Park. In this area you’ll find hiking trails, stairways that lead down to the beach, sea caves and of course sunset views. When the tide is low you can explore the tide pools and find sea creatures.
