Getting your content discovered by new audiences and growing your social media following is a big struggle for content creators, especially if you’re new to this world. One of the secret weapons to expanding your reach is by using extremely relevant and niche hashtags when posting your content.

Using the perfect grouping of hashtags in your posts is an excellent technique to increase the number of views, likes, and shares on your content. If someone really gravitates toward your content, they may also decide to follow you which is how you grow your following.

When someone is using hashtags to search, they are a truly captive audience to that subject. If you’ve done an excellent job at both creating the content and using the most relevant hashtags, you’re setting yourself up for success.

What is a Hashtag?

A hashtag is a word or phrase with no spaces that begins with the hash sign # (formerly known as the pound sign on telephones). It's used within a social media post to help others who might be interested in your topic find it when they search for a keyword or a hashtag. It aids in highlighting your content for people interested in related subjects and welcomes participation in the forms of comments, likes, shares and following your account.

Mastering the hashtag provides you with a powerful approach to engage your audience and boost your social reach at no additional expense other than the time it takes to perform some research and keep up with trends.

What is a Niche Hashtag and How to Find Them?

The definition of niche means specialized and/or targeted for a very specific audience. Using hashtags that are considered niche means that you carefully research and curate your hashtags.

The way you identify these niche hashtags is you look for specific indicators of who the targeted audience is instead of large mass appeal. Niche hashtags also have a sweet spot of 50,000 - 1,500,000 posts when you look up the hashtag on Instagram . If your hashtags are too broad then your content can easily get lost in the large amount of content posted with the same hashtag.

In order to find niche hashtags that fit perfectly with your content, try searching for them in Instagram to see what kind of content pulls up under that search. Avoid hashtags that have several millions of posts because it is likely that they’re too broad and not specific enough.

Can Emojis Be in a Hashtag?

Yes! A hashtag will still work with an emoji included within the characters. In fact, emojis can be very helpful in finding those helpful niche hashtags mentioned above.

Where Should I Put Hashtags in My Social Media Posts?

The answer to this question varies by the type of account. In Instagram it is common to see the hashtags in a comment instead of within the body of the main text. The hashtags will still work in the same way. You can also put them within and at the bottom of your main copy in the post.

In TikTok, Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest the hashtags need to be within the body of the text for it to work properly.

What’s the Maximum Amount of Hashtags You Can Put in a Social Media Post?

Hashtag tactics aren't one-size-fits-all, they differ for each social media platform.

Here’s the breakdown:

The maximum amount of hashtags in an Instagram post is 30.
Only 10 hashtags are allowed in Instagram Stories.
On TikTok you are restricted to 500 characters but not the number of hashtags.
On Twitter your character limit is 280 but no hashtag limit.
Facebook posts allow over 60,000 characters but no limit on hashtags.
Pinterest Pins have a limit of 500 characters but no hashtag limit.

How Many Hashtags Should I Use in a Social Media Post?

On Instagram I usually put about 30 of the most relevant hashtags in the comments. For all the other social platforms I don’t suggest more than 5 because your posts can start to look spammy and uninviting. Keep it clean and simple by using the most relevant hashtags to your content.

When Should You Start Planning and Posting Autumn-Themed Content?

The fall season begins in late September and really goes into full swing by October. The days start getting shorter and the drop in temperature triggers cravings for warm comfort food and drinks. It also starts the process of switching over to fall fashion staples such as sweaters and boots. This would be the time when your audience begins expecting and seeking out fall-themed blog posts and social media posts.

If you’re in the habit of creating content calendars to plan out your content strategy, I suggest you start working on autumn post in early September so you have it ready to go during peak season.
