Christmas in San Francisco - Top Things to See During the Holiday Season
It's the most wonderful time of the year, and I'm here for it! I'm a big fan of Christmas. I love the decorations, the sweet aroma of cinnamon and nutmeg, the cheery lights, and all things sparkly. When a city's festivities and spirit bring on the holiday joy, it makes for an especially memorable experience, and San Francisco will always have a permanent place in my heart for that.
I grew up in the small town of Half Moon Bay which is located just south of San Francisco. My husband and I eventually moved into a tiny apartment in the heart of downtown San Francisco, and we got to experience Christmas in the city firsthand.
In this guide Iβve rounded up my top things to see in the month of December should you find yourself spending the Christmas holiday season in San Francisco. From picture perfect holiday card spots, to the best yuletide sweets, and of course Christmas shopping, weβve got everything you need for a festive itinerary while on your California winter vacation.
What to Pack for San Francisco in December
Before you fly into SFO airport or start road tripping in Northern California, you'll need to make sure you've packed the right wardrobe for San Francisco in December. The last thing you want is to be stuck in a city famous for its fog and temperamental cold weather without the necessary warm clothing layers.
San Francisco weather is notoriously unpredictable compared to other California cities, but with a bit of proactiveness, you shouldn't have too much to worry about. Fog is a regular feature of San Francisco, often rolling in early in the morning, and it's always a guessing game on whether or not the fog will burn off by noon, or just hang around all day.
In San Francisco it gets significantly colder at night because of a very chilly breeze comes inland off the bay. Because you'll probably want to be outside at night to see the twinkling Christmas lights, you'll really want to properly pack your bags with winter gear.
During winter months in San Francisco you can expect temperatures to bounce between the mid-50s to mid-60s, but with a wind chill that can make it feel even colder. Make sure you bring a warm (waterproof for extra points) winter coat and some gloves. You'll also want to pack warm inner layers and a nice fluffy hat to keep you toasty on windy walks around the city.
San Francisco is a Walkable City
San Francisco visitors should expect to do a lot of walking, especially if you book a prime hotel near Union Square. Many of the popular attractions are within 20 - 30 minutes walking distance from each other. Make sure you pack comfortable walking shoes, especially because this city has very steep hills that you most certainly wouldnβt want to tackle wearing heels. Heed my warning and donβt let blisters ruin your holiday!
Getting Around San Francisco
I mentioned above that San Francisco is a pedestrian-friendly city, but there will still be times where youβll need to drive to a location. Because of limited parking spots and the above mentioned very steep hills, parking in the city can truly be a nightmare. I also donβt really recommend attempting to take the bus or trains (both Muni or Bart) because of their unreliable schedules.
Almost everyone I know who lives in the city uses Uber and Lyft ride share services to get around. If youβre not on a tight schedule and want to save a few bucks, I suggest using UberPool.
In order to save yourself time and money during your trip, find a hotel near your wishlist locations to visit so that you can easily walk to your destinations. For day trip outings, be strategic in planning your transportation and avoid using Uber during peak times when itβs more expensive.
Top Things To Do During the Holiday Season in San Francisco
As the days get shorter and the nights get longer, the city sparkles with twinkling lights and glowing window displays. San Francisco looks just like a real life holiday card, and you can't help but feel the warm festive vibes.
Giant Christmas Tree in Union Square & The Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony
Nothing screams Christmas more than seeing a giant Christmas tree light up the night. And in the heart of Union Square, you'll be able to witness over 43,000 lights and 700 shining ornaments light up the biggest Christmas tree of the city.
This 83-foot gigantic tree is an annual gift to the city of San Francisco by Macy's and has created an anticipated tradition for both locals and tourists alike. For many, this celebration marks the start of the holiday season!
The Union Square Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony event is open to the public and free of charge. So you can take photos by the tree or just wander around admiring all of the beautiful decorations around Union Square. The city organizes many live performances, so you'll also get the chance to enjoy live music and sing along with the carolers, which is perfect for the kids!
The dates and times of the event change every year, so check out the official website to stay up to date and plan your visit accordingly.
Ice Skating in Union Square
Right next to the enormous Christmas tree in Union Square youβll see an ice skating rink. We may not get snowfall in San Francisco, but we can still enjoy some of the classic winter activities. The rink opens up in early November and remains open until mid January. There will be Christmas music playing and plenty of festive decor. Skate rentals are included with your admission ticket.
Union Square Holiday Window Displays
Union Square is the central shopping district in San Francisco and home to some of the city's biggest stores. During the holidays, it is filled with Christmas trees, holiday decorations, and numerous seasonal window displays. Plus, tons of restaurants and shops are open late, with Christmas music playing in the background which adds to the Christmas spirit.
Macy's and Saks Fifth Avenue are two of the most popular stores in the area for a reason. They both have elaborate and renowned holiday window displays to enchant passers-by. In years past I've seen animated characters, interactive games and of course swoon worthy luxury goods for fashionistas.
San Francisco SPCA & Macyβs Holiday Windows
Give the best gift of all this holiday season by adopting a furry friend from the SF SPCA and Macy's. From November and throughout the holiday season, the windows at Macy's Union Square fill up with puppies and kittens waiting for their forever home. Together with the San Francisco SPCA, they help care and provide for the animals in need.
When I lived in San Francisco, everyday when I headed into work I would walk past the Macy's Holiday Windows with the puppies and kittens. They are a very popular attraction and you'll see crowds of people watching the baby animals play.
If you want to lend a helping hand for their tremendous efforts but are unable to take a pet home, donations are very much encouraged. Or you can even sign up to become a volunteer yourself!
Neiman-Marcus Atrium with a Multiple-Story Christmas Tree
Take a 2-minute walk from Union Square and youβll find the holiday adorned Neiman-Marcus Atrium. Neiman Marcus is a high-end department store featuring a luxurious interior and unique collections of designer items.
During Christmas, a captivating and beautiful Christmas tree stands in the center of the atrium. The tree spans several stories high, decorated with colorful lights, ornaments, and a giant star on top.
Even if you're a Christmas grinch, the majestic rotunda stained-glass ceiling is a sight to behold. The entire store is decked out in holiday cheer, so even if you're there just for the shopping, you'll catch some of that holiday spirit.
If you're down to splurge on a Christmas dinner, The Rotunda restaurant at the top is a prime location! Committed to providing an elegant dining experience, the restaurant's chefs create cutting-edge dishes, and the view is absolutely breathtaking. Expect prices to be on the pricey side, but the experience alone is worth it!
Holiday High Tea in the Garden Court of the Palace Hotel
The Garden Court at Palace Hotel, located at 2 New Montgomery St in San Francisco, is a historic restaurant that has been serving tea since 1902. Today, it continues to be one of the best places in town to enjoy high tea, especially during the holidays. During the month of December, The Palace Hotel bejewels the lobby and Garden Court with Christmas trees, wreathes and twinkling lights.
Guests can enjoy a selection of finger sandwiches, scones, and pastries while taking in the beautiful gold architecture and interior design of this adorned landmark. They also offer Tea with Santa on select dates that you can check out here.

Fisherman's Wharfβs Giant Christmas Tree
Fisherman's Wharf is an iconic part of San Francisco located on the Northern waterfront. With its picturesque cable cars, sea lions lounging on the docks, and famous Pier 39, there are many things to do and see in this popular visitor area of town.
Fisherman's Wharf attracts tourists all year round, but the Christmas season is when it really comes to life with its twinkling lights, festive decorations, and the ever-so-cheerful gigantic Christmas Tree. Stroll around the area, and then have a famous Boudin Sourdough Bread Bowl with Clam Chowder for lunch.
Immerse Yourself in the Magic of the Dickens Fair
The Dickens Fair is like walking into a scene from an old Victorian Christmas postcard. It's an immersive experience that will make you feel like you've been transported back in time, where Victorian-era fashion, architecture, and entertainment reign supreme. You'll be blown away when you see how much detail has been put into each aspect of this incredible event.
Dickens's characters come to life during the fair, which takes place on multiple stages and in the re-created streets of London. With actors and vendors in costume roaming the streets, Victorian-style shops selling unique gifts, food stalls serving up treats from the era, and entertainment on multiple stages throughout the event site, you'll undoubtedly be thoroughly entertained.
There are also many interactive theatrical performances and games for kids to enjoy, plus learn more about the history and culture of the era. Costumes are encouraged but not required for those participating, but if you have a Victorian corset dress lying around, don't hesitate to put it on.
Take Family Christmas Photos with the Golden Gate Bridge Backdrop
Probably the single most iconic landmark in San Francisco is the Golden Gate Bridge. And you can totally plan on taking family photos with the bridge in the background. These pictures would really make for memorable Christmas card photos.

Throw on Your Best Santa Costume for Santacon
Union Square is the starting point of an annual and rather unexpected tradition that quickly became a crowd favorite: The SantaCon!
SantaCon originally began as a protest against the commercialization and capitalistic nature surrounding Christmas. In 1994 a group of around 30 friends, led by Rob Schmitt, a member of the Cacophony Society, took over the streets of San Francisco. They rampaged across pubs, crashed corporate Christmas parties, and tried to bring their ideas of anti-establishment and satire to the world.
The idea quickly caught on, and today over 300 cities around the world host similar events that have little in common with the original protest. In San Francisco, SantaCon attracts over 20,000 people dressed as Santa Claus to parade the streets and basically hop between pubs and have a good time.
If you've never attended an event like this before, you might be a little confused by what's going on. It's all about having fun, so just enjoy the playful shenanigans of hundreds of Santas running around the city. The event takes place in December, so if you want to participate and stay updated, you can check out their official website here.
Note: The organizers do not condone or suggest any drunken or naughty Santa antics, but if you're more into quiet shopping or strolls with the kids, I suggest you fend off the main areas like City Hall and Polk Street.
Watch a Very Cheeky Christmas Themed Drag Queen Show
San Francisco has been crowned 'America's Gay Capital' by Life Magazine, with good reason! Local theaters put on some very over the top drag queen shows, especially around Christmas time. You're guaranteed an evening full of laughter with these fabulous "ladies."
The city's drag scene is rich with history and thriving with an ever-expanding roster of talented performers. From the wild and wacky to the refined yet extravagant, these shows are just what you need to get your funny bone into the holiday spirit.
Annual holiday drag shows include:
A Drag Queen Christmas - Hosted by Trinity Taylor and Nina West and featuring TV stars from the beloved show RuPaul's Drag Race.
Holiday Gaiety - Peaches Christ joins conductor Edwin Outwater and several other special guests to bring you an evening of music and comedy.
Take pictures with Santa at the Westfield San Francisco Center
There's nothing like a good photo op with Santa. Whether you're looking to capture a timeless family memory or just want an excuse to dress up in holiday attire and pretend you're a kid again, this is the place to be! Santa makes appearances at the mall throughout December, so be sure to stop by and take some photos with him before you head home or shop.
See the Elaborate Gingerbread Houses at the The Fairmont Hotel and Westin St. Francis Hotel
Thereβs a San Francisco legend about the two enormous gingerbread houses that get assembled every holiday season at The Fairmont and The Westin. The lore goes as such, every year they are in competition to outdo one another in how grand of scale they can make the gingerbread houses. The result of this βfeudβ is that we get to see some truly spectacular cookie masterpieces.
San Francisco Houses with the Best Holiday Lights
One of the most notable and iconic features of San Francisco are the Victorian-style houses. These homes become even more whimsical when they are decorated to the nines with twinkling lights and Christmas decor.
You'll be amazed by how passionate and creative San Francisco's residents can get during Christmas. There are a few San Francisco homes that are notoriously festive, making them great spots for fun holiday Instagram and TikTok travel content creation.
These house listed below are some of the city's most extravagant and show-stopping displays:
Tom and Jerry's House at 3650 21st St - This house is so epic with their Christmas decorations that it actually has its own Yelp page! Tom Taylor and Jerry Goldstein are the owners of this house and have been contributing to the Christmas spirit with their own unique twist of decorations since the 1980s. Now how's that for a commitment? Recently Tom passed away and it is unclear on whether or not the tradition will continue. Fingers crossed weβll see more merriment from this beautiful home.
Christmas Tree Lane - Located at 3200 block of Thompson Avenue in Alameda, youβll find 55 houses in one neighborhood filled with holiday decorations.
68 Castro Street House - According to San Francisco Bucket List, the 68th Castro St House βWins Christmas.β Every inch of the exterior of this house is filled with Christmas decorations, lights and even a Santa. This house is beautiful both in the daytime and at night.
Get a Christmas Tree at Clancy's Christmas Farm
While there are undoubtedly many places to get a Christmas tree nowadays, Clancy's offers a memorable holiday experience. The family-owned and operated farm has been in business for over 70 years, and is considered a San Francisco Christmas tradition. The trees come from trusted family farms in Oregon and are hand-selected to ensure that each one is a perfect size and shape for your home. During your visit, make sure to dress in your holiday best because this is a cute spot for holiday card photos.
Ride the Holiday Decorated Cable Cars
San Francisco is a city of hills, and the cable car system that runs through the streets has long been one of the funnest ways to get around. The cable cars have become a deep-rooted part of the city's identity and are the first and last manually operated cable systems worldwide!
Decked out head-to-toe with festive decorations, ornaments, and candy canes, you can ride to popular destinations like Powell Street, Fisherman's Wharf and the very steep California Street. Onboard the cable cars youβll get the chance to see scenic neighborhoods like Chinatown, North Beach and Market Street.
San Francisco City Hall
During the month of December the archways and dome of San Francisco City Hall are lit up in festive red and green lights. My husband and I got married at the San Francisco City Hall so it definitely holds a special place in my heart. The inside of the building is open to the public and it has a huge and stunning Rotunda, a beautiful place for couples photos.
Market Street in San Francisco
I couldnβt possibly write a San Francisco guide without mentioning the shopping area of Market Street. This area of the city is always filled with hustle and bustle, with large shopping stores and hotels. The Westfield Shopping Mall is located on Market with big stores such as Bloomingdales, H&M, Nordstrom and Sephora.
Thereβs also a movie theater if you want to catch the latest Christmas movie on the bog screen.
Enjoy Hot Chocolate in Ghirardelli Square
Ghirardelli Square is a San Francisco institution and definitely worth a visit. What started as a humble chocolate factory in the late 1800s has now transformed into a world-renowned tourist destination and shopping center. If you're looking for a nice way to spend an afternoon, enjoy a cup of hot chocolate from Ghirardelli Chocolate Company while you admire the beautiful lights, big Christmas tree and bay views.

New Years Eve Firework Show in San Francisco along the Embarcadero
Fireworks lighting up the night sky and reflecting on the water while you watch from the shoreline? Yes, please! Attracting over 200,000 spectators annually, the New Year's Eve Fireworks Show is one of the best and most popular ways to celebrate the new year in San Francisco.
Pro Tip: Crowds start lining up early, so if you want to secure a lovely spot, be sure to get there early. You can see the fireworks pretty much from any point on the Embarcadero. Many people bring picnic blankets and camp out in a spot. It gets very cold so bundle up!
